Hi, Families!

I hope that your summer is going well.  I really miss your kids, and I so hope that we will run into one another around Durham!

I am writing because I was unable to get the DVD burner on my computer fixed.  It is out of warranty.  I have been trying to figure out a way to get the slideshow and pictures to you, and I think I have finally figured it out!  I apologize for it taking so long.  Please click the links below to access the .zip files.  Let me know if you are unable to access them.

P.S.  You will need to download the .zip files to your computer.  Most computers will automatically decompress and make available the file contents; if yours does not, a quick google search ("open zip files on your operating system/computer here") ought to identify the steps to do so.

Voting for Chick Names on Voting Day

On Voting Day, we talked about how voting is a way for a group of people to make decisions.  We talked briefly about how voting could lead to the changes that you want.  Then we voted on names for our chicks (the choices were from a brainstorming session with the kids)!

We even had a voting station and a ballot box.

We tallied the votes, and Fluffy was the name of the grey chick!

Artist Jesa Rae Richards came and helped us make inside out books to correlate with our study of animals and their habitats.  The books are still at school and will be part of our end of the year student-led conferences.

Chick Time

We have occasionally been using science to track the chicks' changes as they grow.  We saw them grow from downy little chicks with egg teeth to feathered, waddled, and combed pullets!

Eggs to Chicks!

During our unit on oviparous animals, we broke open eggs to label the insides.  We saw the chalaza, the yolk, the air cell, the shell membrane, and the egg cell!  We also candled the eggs in the incubator as we waited 21 days for the chicks to hatch.  It was really neat to see the changes.  We even saw the chicks moving around in the eggs!
